If you've ridden the Eastside Trail on a sunny Saturday lately, you know the deal: strollers weaving, scooters buzzing past dog leashes, a Class 3 commuter blowing by at speeds the BeltLine was never built for. Atlanta City Council has taken notice. A new proposal floated this month would carve dedicated lanes into the BeltLine to physically separate e-bikes, scooters, and cyclists from people on foot — joining a wave of cities, from Naples to Kensington, rethinking shared paths.
That's the long game. The vote, design work, and concrete pours are months — probably years — away. In the meantime, here are seven etiquette rules to keep your ride safe, friendly, and legal.
1. When it's crowded, go slow. Really slow.
This is rule one for a reason. On a packed Saturday between Ponce City Market and Piedmont Park, the most polite thing you can do is coast at walking pace — or get off and walk your bike. Seriously. If you're constantly braking and calling passes every five seconds, the trail is telling you it's full. Walking a block through the densest stretch costs you two minutes and earns every pedestrian's goodwill (and the council's). Save the cruising speed for the open segments.
2. Treat 15 mph as the ceiling, not the cruise
The BeltLine and PATH network cap all riders at 15 mph — no exceptions for Class 1, 2, or 3 e-bikes. On a Class 3 that'll happily do 28, ease off well before you think you need to. If you're passing pedestrians at a delta of more than 10 mph, you're riding too hot.
3. Call your pass — out loud, every time
A bell plus a clear "on your left!" about 20 feet back is the gold standard. Walkers in earbuds, kids on scooters, and dogs on retractable leashes need a second to process. Ring once at distance, voice it as you approach, and never assume the first ding landed.
4. Pass like a car, not like a roadie
Pull fully into the opposite lane, give at least three feet of clearance, and tuck back in before the next blind curve. The temptation to thread a tight gap between a jogger and an oncoming cargo bike is real — resist it. Most BeltLine near-misses happen in that squeeze zone.
5. Know your footprint — especially on a cargo bike
Atlanta families are trading second cars for $3,000–$6,000 cargo e-bikes, and the U.S. cargo market is projected to hit $1.54 billion by 2035. Longtails and front-loaders are wider, heavier, and slower to stop. With kids on board, leave extra room, brake earlier into crowded sections, and accept you can't move through foot traffic at commuter pace. That's physics.
6. Know where the conflicts happen
The Eastside Trail between North Avenue and Piedmont Park is the chokepoint. The Westside Trail south of Lena Street is quieter but has more blind curves. New connector segments still have construction-fence pinch points. Commuting at pace? Ride early morning or after dark with good lights. Saturday afternoon with family? Accept the Eastside is a walking trail with bikes on it, not the other way around.
7. Scooters and Class 3 riders: read the room
Under HB 454, Class 3 e-bikes (up to 28 mph assist) require a helmet and a rider 15 or older. Scooters fall under separate rules but the same 15 mph cap applies. Both modes are in the council's crosshairs — they're driving the complaints. Ride courteously now and you're making the case for better infrastructure.
Bonus at intersections like Monroe, Highland, and 10th: stop, make eye contact, wave people through. Every predictable e-bike rider warms the political climate for separated lanes.
The infrastructure conversation Atlanta is finally having only works if riders prove it's worth the investment. That proof gets built one polite pass — and one slow roll through the crowd — at a time.
What's next for the council proposal
The Center for Civic Innovation flagged the dedicated-lane proposal this month, part of a clear 2026 trend: Naples just advanced a micromobility restriction ordinance, and Kensington and Chelsea seized 2,500 e-bikes in a parking crackdown the same week. Atlanta's approach — build more space instead of ban more bikes — is the constructive end of that wave. Watch for committee hearings at City Hall, and whether the pilot lands first on the Eastside Trail (most likely) or system-wide.
